An agreement has been signed between the government and the wind energy industry to begin training 60,000 new engineers and technicians. The Wind and Renewables Skills Sector Accord was finalised at the British Wind Energy Association (BWEA) Summit in Liverpool, which will lead to a ten-fold growth in employment in the sector from its current level of 6,000 jobs.
RWE npower Renewables and Siemens were among the corporations who agreed to develop a skills route map for green collar employees entering the industry.
Maria McCaffery, chief executive of the BWEA, explained that the wind industry faces an "enormous task" to recruit experienced workers.
She said: "To attract the investment and build the industry we need to have a skilled workforce ready to work in the sector.
"However, today we are already suffering from a growing shortage of qualified technicians and professional engineers."
Last month, the shadow energy secretary Greg Clark revealed that the Conservative Party will create 70,000 'green' employment opportunities if it is voted into power next year.
