The development of a bio-refinery in Teesside will create hundreds of employment opportunities for the north east's labour market.A £3.5 million government-supported feasibility study is currently being carried out by Ineos Bio on a location at Seal Sands, which could be used as a base for the UK's first operational bio-refinery.
If the study is successful the plant could be in use by 2015, generating millions of pounds of investment and hundreds of jobs in the north east.
David Kidney, energy and climate change minister, outlined the importance of this project to the Teesside region.
He said: "If successful, the bio-refinery technologies being demonstrated will play a significant role in helping us meet our ambitious renewable energy targets, as well as reducing waste."
Last week, Tesco Bank announced that it would be creating 1,000 jobs in the north east thanks to the opening of a call and contact centre in Newcastle.
