The extension of Northern Ireland's only salt plant will create ten new jobs in the country, according to the government.Edwin Poots, Northern Ireland's environment minister, disclosed that the mine, which is being lengthened by almost 279 hectares, will support the employment of 54 individuals - with ten of these positions available for jobseekers.
The plant is located near Carrickfergus and will support salt reserves for the next 30 years, according to the minister.
Mr Poots explained that the salt production facility, which is one of only three in the UK, will make a "significant contribution" to the country's economy.
He said: "With this approval we have secured the positions of its 54 full-time employees and up to ten new jobs, together with a large number of companies and people involved in the supply and maintenance of this industry."
Last month, the retailer Sainsbury's disclosed that it will create 350 jobs in Northern Ireland with the development of a store in County Down.
