An oil and gas exploration specialist could create 170 jobs in the north east of England if proposals to build a facility near Scunthorpe are approved.

Moorland Energy is preparing to submit a planning application to North Yorkshire County Council in the coming months for a £50 million project, which will see the development of a processing plant near Thornton-le-Dale, the Scarborough Evening News reported.

The company, which also wants to build pie-lines and a new access road in the region, claims that 150 temporary employment opportunities will be created in the development stages, with a further 20 permanent positions available upon completion.

Lawrie Erasmus, chief executive of Moorland Energy, hopes that construction will begin in 2011 and the facility become fully operational by the beginning of 2013.

He told the local newspaper: "We would like to reassure the local community we are committed to this area for the long term."

The north east of England's employment situation was further improved earlier this month when the printing firm Skylark announced that it will hire 70 new employees in Scarborough.
