A recruitment drive has begun at a dairy in Tyneside, which closed with the loss of 300 jobs last year.

Medina Dairy has taken over the running of the Dairy Farmers of Britain's Blaydon depot and will initially hire 50 workers upon its opening later this month.

However, the company plans to continue increasing its workforce in the north east of England as the year progresses - with a further 50 employment opportunities to be made available before the end of 2010.

Gary White, spokesman for Medina Dairy, suggested that this announcement is particularly good news for the "recession-hit area".

He told the BBC: "As we go through the year and hope to win more business then we will be recruiting an additional 50 workers, taking the total up to 100."

The north east of England's labour market was given additional cause for optimism last month when prime minister Gordon Brown kick-started the development of a wind turbine factory in Tyneside, which will create 500 jobs.
