A Northern Ireland-based insurance firm has created 22 customer service jobs at its Newtownards headquarters.

Hughes Insurance announced that it has increased the number of staff members it employs in the province to more than 200, as it looks to expand its operating hours and online service.

Identifying that the further expansion of their workforce is "inevitable" next year, the company explained that it needed to improve the flexibility of its business model to serve the consumer market.

Gareth Brady, a director of Hughes Insurance, said that the financial firm is reacting to changes in the insurance industry.

He told the Belfast Telegraph: "Our recruitment programme has been dictated by forecasting customer demands - our customers want to deal with us how and when it suits them, on the high street, online or on the phone."

Last month, three major retailers - Next Home, Dreams and Mothercare - disclosed that they would be creating 75 jobs in Northern Ireland with the opening of stores at the Crescent Link Retail Park.
