Graduates urged to be flexible
3rd July 2009
Graduates must widen their job searches beyond the large recruiters' annual internships, according to a leading employment expert.
The Recruitment Society has advised the recent batch of university-leavers to be flexible when applying for available positions and to think about beginning their careers in organisations and industries they had not previously considered.
New members of the labour market face a particularly difficult search for employment this summer, according to the Local Government Association, which has forecast that close to one million young people will be out of work and education by the third quarter of 2009.
Steve Huxham, chairman of The Recruitment Society, explained that jobseekers can not "sit back … and wait for jobs to come rolling in".
He said: "The more applications you make, the more effort you have put into those applications, the more opportunities you identify. That is what makes the difference."
Earlier this week, High Fliers Research published the results of a recent survey that revealed the number of vacancies in graduate level jobs has declined by 13.5 per cent since 2008.
