The government has provided £450 million in funding to secure the employment of thousands of construction workers on private sector housing projects. The Kickstart scheme was launched by the housing minister John Healey so that construction programmes stalled by the recession can be completed around the country.
Specifically, the government claimed that this initiative would ensure the employment of 9,500 individuals and lead to the construction of 11,000 homes.
The funding will be distributed among the UK's regional authorities, with Greater London receiving the highest proportion at £64.2 million.
Mr Healey, who is MP for Wentworth, explained that the initiative's "tough terms" will see the majority of this money repaid by 2014.
He said: "With this investment, we are creating jobs and helping build the homes people need."
Last month, the Nuclear Decommissioning Agency's decision to sell 450 acres adjacent to the Sellafield nuclear power station brought the creation of 10,000 temporary construction jobs in Cumbria close to reality.
