A new scheme will offer those seeking jobs in the north-west advice and support in a range of outreach locations in a bid to tackle long-term unemployment. Those seeking jobs in unemployment hotspots of the north-west of England will be able to access new government assistance in community centres and GP surgeries under new plans.
A pilot scheme has already been running in Liverpool since October, alongside trials in Greenwich and East Durham, with Jobcentre Plus Outreach advisers and partners from resident groups, local authorities, housing associations and other bodies working together to provide guidance.
The Department for Work and Pensions is now rolling out the programme across the UK in a bid to assist more than 15,000 people in finding work.
Announcing the scheme, work and pensions minister Helen Goodman said: "Work is the best way out of poverty and our outreach programme is part of the broad range of support available through Jobcentre Plus to help people into work."
Other parts of the north-west of England region that will benefit from the initiative include Greater Manchester East and West and Merseyside, while similar schemes are also being established in Norfolk, London, Ayrshire, Dumfries, Galloway and Inverclyde, Kent, Staffordshire, South Tyne and Wear Valley and other areas identified as having high jobless totals.
