British Gas to provide 2,600 jobs

2nd July 2009

The UK's leading supplier of gas has pledged to generate 2,600 employment opportunities by 2012.

British Gas has revealed that it will require 2,100 smart energy experts, 400 support staff and 130 managers to facilitate the roll out of new 'green' power meters to every customer in the UK.

The monitoring project is expected to begin next year and will be aided by a new training facility in Leicester, which can accommodate 125 apprentices at any one time.

Phil Bentley, managing director of British Gas, explained that the company is "investing in the technologies of the future".

He said: "Our announcement of 2,600 new jobs by 2012 shows we are committed to creating skilled green jobs in Britain and training the experts who will help customers become more energy efficient in the future."

Last month, a study by the Carbon Trust suggested that more than 250,000 jobs could be provided to the UK's labour force by 2050 if significant renewable energy investments are made.
