Cardiff is set to receive 600 new call centre jobs as Conduit adds to its already substantial workforce in the region.

The American company has recently taken on a huge contract with British Gas, and said it is "actively" looking for new members of staff to deal with its increased workload.

First minister Carwyn Jones welcomed the news, and said it was further evidence of the strengthening employment market in Wales.

"Last week we heard, for two months in a row, the Welsh labour market employment rate and inactivity rate have outperformed the UK as a whole, over both the quarter and the year. Professional and financial services are a key growth sector for the Welsh economy," he said.

The new jobs will be based at the Fusion Point office scheme in Cardiff, which is expected to eventually support 40,000 jobs. The open-plan nature of the development makes it ideal for call centre operations, according to the developers.

Conduit, a wholly owned subsidiary of US-based operation kgb, already employs 1,900 people in South Wales at sites in Cardiff city centre, Cardiff Gate and Swansea.

Officials said that the company is now actively working to fill 320 positions. The remaining 280 positions will be filled by the end of the year.
