Network Rail is to provide 1,000 jobs at its new headquarters in Milton Keynes, and is encouraging those who would not have considered a career in the industry to apply.

In total, 3,000 employees will be housed at the building on the site of the former National Hockey Stadium and one third of these will be recruited from the local area, MK News reported.

The jobs available span across a number of disciplines, and staff are expected to begin moving into the building in June.

A spokesman for Network Rail told the news provider: "There are a lot of roles that people wouldn’t think that Network Rail would offer.

"When people think of Network Rail they think of construction workers in their high visibility jackets but we also need people who help with the general running of rail services on a daily basis."

A number of the jobs available include those which have been passed over by former employees who have chosen not to relocate.

The new building will be fully staffed by the autumn.

Network Rail took on the task of managing Britain's railways in October 2002 and the company expects passenger demand to double over the next 30 years and freight demand to rise 120 per cent.

It currently has around 35,000 members of staff located across the UK.
