Starbucks has launched its first apprenticeship scheme in the England to coincide with the launch of National Apprenticeship Week.

The coffee chain will be offering 45 apprenticeships each month teaching barista skills and customer service throughout 2012, with the first launching in London in the spring.

The apprenticeships themselves will last for 12 months and will contain a combination of classroom training and learning on the job.

All those over 16 years old are eligible to apply, including those who have worked before and are looking to change career.

Kris Engskov, managing director of Starbucks UK & Ireland, said: "We have been steadily working towards providing this scheme for young people and believe it's a great way to attract new talent into our business at the same time as improving employee retention and supporting our future growth. This scheme will also create greater expertise within the coffee industry."

Those who remain with Starbucks will also be given the opportunity to progress to higher apprenticeships over time.

The announcement comes as the latest National Apprenticeship Week gets underway, which the government claims is set to be the largest ever.

Over 500 events are set to be held across the country celebrating achievements, and partners have agreed to work with 300 businesses in industries such as fashion, media and design to deliver 500 apprenticeships starting this September.
