New energy and climate change secretary Edward Davey has reiterated the government's commitment to creating green growth and jobs in the UK. Mr Davey and deputy prime minister Nick Clegg visited the Building Research Establishment’s Innovation Park near Watford, a testing site for green homes, and outlined what they see as the future of the sector.
Last year saw new records set for global investment in renewable energy, with China, India, Korea and Brazil all emerging as magnets for investment, Mr Clegg highlight.
It is the government's hope that the UK can begin to draw in a greater share of funding, to make the country "the number one destination for green investment".
Mr Clegg said: "We have every reason to be confident. The combination of enviable wind, wave and tidal power, a world-beating research base and a proud history of engineering give the UK a clear competitive edge.
"So we’re already in pole position. But the reality is: we need to sharpen our elbows if we want to stay ahead."
Mr Davey, who was appointed to the post at the Department of Energy and Climate change on Friday February 3rd, named the creation of green jobs as one of his major priorities.
The 2009 Renewable Energy Directive sets a target for the UK to derive 15 per cent of its energy from renewables by 2020, but significant levels of deployment are needed in the coming years if this is to be achieved.
