UK poised to receive thousands of green collar jobs

The UK is poised "on the cusp of a low carbon revolution", which will see thousands of new job vacancies open up in the green energy sector, RenewableUK has claimed. Speaking at the RenewableUK Health and Safety 2012, chief executive Maria McCaffery described 2011 as a "momentous year" for the renewables industry.
Over 50,000 megawatts of wind power capacity is currently online, and at times during the past year green energy contributed a total of 12 per cent to the UK's grid.
Looking ahead, Ms McCaffery said its clear renewables have now "cemented our position in the energy arena", moving from the periphery into the mainstream, and are poised for further growth in the year ahead.
For example, Serco recently announced it has been awarded a contract to help counter the effects of wind farms on the UK's air defence radar.
This deal alone could see an additional four gigawatts of renewable energy made available, which is enough to power two million homes.
On top of the significant expansion happening in the wind industry, the UK is also carving a name for itself in other areas of the renewable energy industry, Ms McCaffery highlighted, bringing significant benefits to the country.
"We are on the cusp of a low carbon revolution... It is going to create tens of thousands of new 'green collar' jobs and it will establish the United Kingdom as the undisputed world leader in the development of both offshore wind, and wave and tidal technology," she concluded.
