BP has announced plans boost by almost 50 per cent its intake of graduates this year, and will offer recruits the chance to work with the London 2012 Organising committee (LOCOG).

This year, the oil major will take on almost 250 graduates, with 100 of these being given the opportunity to take part in two week secondments with LOCOG in areas such as the main operations centre, transport or city operations.

BP is the official oil and gas partner of the London Olympic Games. It currently takes on almost 1,000 graduates worldwide each year, the majority of which are from science, technology, engineering and maths backgrounds.

Initial training for this year's UK intake will be offered by BP before they join in the summer, before further training is offered by LOCOG. The recruits will then officially start their placements with the oil company in September 2012.

Universities and Science Minister David Willetts described the announcement as "excellent news".

"Working with the London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG) will give these graduates a fantastic, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the Olympics. This will be particularly welcome news for graduates and a reassuring sign that the recruitment market is improving thanks to companies such as BP," he added.

London will hold the Olympic Games between July 27th and August 12th this year.
