Cloud computing is primed to create thousands of new ICT jobs in the UK in the coming years and promote economic growth, new research suggested. The study, conducted by the London School of Economics and Political Science, suggested the number of cloud-related jobs in the UK is to grow to 4,040 by 2014 as the industry experiences significant growth.
Between 2010 and 2014, a high start-up rate for small to medium-sized cloud-related businesses is predicted, with the web-centred smartphone services industry primed to see the greatest levels of growth.
The impact of cloud computing on this sector is expected to bring with it a 349 per cent rise in cloud-related jobs.
John Vassallo, vice president EU affairs at Microsoft , which commissioned the research, said: "Cloud computing and the explosion in access to technology is impacting the character of work across industries, generating new skills demands, employment and growth opportunities."
The report claimed that there was little chance the rise in cloud computing would result in redundancies, as companies are likely to retrain staff. This will come alongside the hiring of new staff, who are more likely to be receiving a higher salary.
Mr Vassallo said the report shows a "real opportunity to capture the Cloud's potential" in Europe.
MarketsandMarkets has previously suggested the cloud computing market is primed to reach $121.1 billion (£76 billion) in 2015, from just $37.8 billion in 2010.
