European firms continue to prize highly skilled professionals

Highly skilled applicants continue to experience more success when searching for a new employment challenge, new European figures show. In the second quarter of 2011, a 34 per cent bump was seen in the number of Europeans looking for
job vacancies in professional fields.
A corresponding 25 per cent increase has been seen in the number of job seekers finding roles as legislators, senior officials and managers, "underlining the continuing importance of high skill levels in employment opportunities", the European Vacancy Monitor noted.
It echoed the results from the October 2011 bulletin, which found that while demand for highly skilled professionals was on the up, low skilled jobs continued to account for the largest proportion of positions in the labour market.
Looking across the employment market in Europe as a whole, the report found "job turnover" was responsible for the majority of job seekers throughout 2011.
Between the second quarter of 2010 and the corresponding period in 2011, around 46.7 million people in 26 countries found a job, but employment itself only increased by one million.
The figures are compiled using data from public employment services,
temporary work agencies, online services, the EU statistics office job vacancy statistics, national statistical offices and other relevant research.
The total number of job seekers in Europe in the middle of 2011 reached 12.2 million.
