Recruitment consultants should advise clients that a change in office layout could significantly boost employer morale. This is according to Carole Spiers, business stress consultant and author of Show Stress Who's Boss!, who suggested that changing the way a workspace is laid out can give people different scenery to look at and new people to work alongside, which could boost productivity at a time when this may be low.
"People do get on your nerves in the office – some people are very loud on the telephone [for example]. So if you can move people around it's not going to make that quite as difficult to manage," she said.
Ms Spiers added that design perks such as potted plants and comfortable chairs could add a bit of diversity to an office and make employees more content and happy about sitting in the same place all day.
She commented: "Organisations need to try to make their offices like a family or community."
Research from interior and exterior office supplies company Ambius in collaboration with the University of Exeter recently suggested that employers who ask their employees opinion about the workplace setting often find that there is a higher level of motivation simply by allowing them to have an input in the way the office looks.
