More than 10,000 security jobs are being created in London in what has been described as one of the biggest recruitment drives this century.

The Olympics Park Authority has announced that it has begun its recruitment process for staff to man events and venues during the London Games this summer.

According to reports, some 34,000 applicants have entered into the application process and they will all have to be vetted to trim the figure down to the desired number of staff.

Paul Deighton, chief executive of Games organisers Locog, said the recruitment drive was a great way of bringing jobs to London and the UK.

Security firm G4S also commented that this is the "biggest paid recruitment drive this century".

Staff allocated security roles will work alongside 13,500 military personnel taken on to add extra protection to visitors and those involved in the Games.

Mr Deighton told the Press Association: "This is G4S's core business and they have rigorous processes. On top of that, we have an Olympic accreditation process with a series of checks so this is about as tough as it can possibly be."

G4S staff will be paid from £8.50 an hour.

The London Olympics will take place from July 27th to August 12th.
