Supermarket chain Asda has announced that it is to create 5,000 retail jobs as part of a £500 million expansion plan. The company, which is owned by American brand Walmart, unveiled its plans to extend its business across the UK.
Prime minister David Cameron and Nick Clegg welcomed the announcement and stated that the company is showing strength by offering its workforce an opportunity to progress within the company through training schemes and apprenticeships.
Mr Cameron said: "The additional investment and 5,000 new jobs announced by Asda today will be a real boost for the economy and more importantly for people around Britain seeking jobs."
The retailer will open 25 new stores, refurbish 43 existing shops and open three new depots this year as part of the large scheme
Asda took on around 30,000 staff in the past year when it acquired low-budget store chain Netto.
The company claimed that around 50 per cent of the jobs created in the past year went to young people, while 8,500 were given to those who had applied through Job Centre Plus.
A new depot will be opened in Rochdale, Greater Manchester in replacement of a one in Grangemouth, Falkirk that will be closed.
This announcement comes in the wake of supermarket chain Tesco deciding to scale back on its plans to open new big out of town hypermarkets.
