Development projects to improve areas of rural England could boost the economy and create permanent and part-time jobs.

This is according to a new report from the housing and planning charity, the Town and Country Planning Association (TCPA), which suggested there are large structural, economic and environmental challenges in many areas of English countryside.

In a statement from the organisation, leaders of the study said that high-quality building projects and the development of new communities could offer rural regions significant improvements in employability and job creation.

Trevor Cherrett, TCPA policy council member and lead author of the Rural Policy Statement, commented: "New communities offer a powerful opportunity to deliver much needed housing for our rural areas in a holistic and comprehensively planned way, rather than through piecemeal development."

He added that more job opportunities could lead to a higher number of people being able to live a comfortable and sustainable lifestyle.

New garden cities, market towns or sustainable urban extensions will not cure a shortage of housing and jobs, but they are important in developing the community and opportunities with it, Mr Cherrett continued.

Gordon Miller, co-founder and sustainability and communications director at environmental group Sustain Worldwide recently suggested that the government's Green Deal could create thousands of jobs for people across the country.
