A manufacturer in Wales has been awarded a multi-million pound contract to build 35 wind turbines, creating some 45 industrial jobs. Construction firm Mabey Bridge has taken on 45 people as a result of the new contract but it is said that 50 further jobs have been transferred to its factory in Chepstow, Monmouthshire.
This follows a major deal with German company Nordex, which it predicted will continue to open up new opportunities for further wind turbine contracts and employment positions.
Alex Smale, Mabey Bridge UK director, told BBC Radio Wales: "2011 was a challenging year for the wind turbine industry.
"To put this into perspective last year the UK wind market was less than 250 towers so this is a really significant order," he added.
The turbine towers will be installed west of Gilfach Goch in the Rhondda valleys in June - marking the first deal where a Welsh company is in charge of a contract to install the eco-friendly energy source in the country.
Furthermore, other towers will be built across the Scottish border.
The company created 240 positions when it opened its £38 million factory in Chepstow in May last year.
Mabey Bridge recently announced the completion of a project to bring wind turbines to the Marr wind farm site in South Yorkshire.
