Up to 500 new employment opportunities are set to be created in Scotland as a result of the opening of a new science centre in Newhouse, North Lanarkshire. The former Merck Sharpe and Dohme facility at Newhouse has been purchased by BioCity and will now be developed as a base for bioscience, pharmaceutical and healthcare research, local publication the Wishaw Press reported.
Offering 130,000 sq ft of purpose-built laboratory space, the facility has been empty since its closure in 2010, but will now benefit from a new lease of life.
Councillor Jim McCabe, leader of North Lanarkshire Council, said: "The council's regeneration and infrastructure service has been heavily involved in helping to make this a reality and it reaffirms my belief that North Lanarkshire is a great place to invest in and do business."
Elsewhere, energy minister Fergus Ewing recently revealed plans to boost employment opportunities in the renewable sector in Scotland over the coming 12 months.
He announced investment totalling £46 billion in 2012, with the government aiming to deploy an additional 17 GW of renewable power by the end of the year. It forms part of the Scottish government's goal to have 100 per cent of the country's energy requirements serviced by renewable sources by 2020.
