Jobhunting 'should be like a job in itself'

Recruitment agencies should encourage their clients to treat jobhunting as a job in itself.

This is according to Mike Barnard, project manager at career advice site Milkround, who suggested that jobseekers can put themselves in line for a higher success rate if they show the same dedication to looking for a permanent job as they would working in such a position.

"Get up, be at your desk at nine o'clock, check your emails, look for jobs and apply for jobs, have a lunch break, have an afternoon of making calls, putting applications out there," the expert advised.

He added that people should respond to anyone who gets back to them with confidence and an open mind.

Giving yourself a break in the evening and at weekends is a good idea too, Mr Barnard explained, as this will ensure you have some time to relax without getting too bogged down in the many applications. - you suddenly switched to using 'you' instead of 'they/them/people' in this para

The careers expert's comments were made shortly before [the] Institute for Public Policy Research revealed that there are on average 20 applications made for every job in some areas of the UK where unemployment is at its worst.

Statistics from the research body found that urban areas in the North of England are particularly  likely to see a high number of applicants for each available position.
