Up to 250 skilled tradesperson jobs are to become available in the North East of England after a gas works firm in Teesside won a multi-million-pound contact to build a new production platform in the North Sea.

Wilton Engineering Services has made a deal with energy company ConocoPhillips, resulting in 100 new posts being made available at the site near Middlesbrough as well as 150 sub-contractor positions.

Bill Scott, chief executive officer of Wilton Group, said: "To have this project carried out in Teesside will be a great boost not only to our workforce, but also the wider local economy.

"The award further enhances our reputation to build large-scale engineering projects."

He added that the extension project is good news for the gas industry and will also endorse the skills of the "talented" workforce.

Construction to the 2,200-tonne compression module for ConocoPhillips' Britannia field off Aberdeen will be completed by 2013.

The government's energy minister Charles Hendry also commented that the deal is a positive step for the UK economy that will see people put into work over a prolonged period.

He continued that recognising local engineering talent in the north-east is important for the UK's industrial sector.

ConocoPhillips operates in areas of the energy industry such as petroleum exploration and production, refining, marketing and supply, natural gas gathering and chemical and plastics production.
