Around 500 new industrial jobs are to be created at the Co-operative group and Nestle under new investment plans.

The Co-op announced that its new £22 million distribution depot in north Derbyshire, which will employ 1,080 staff, will also take on 340 jobs, the Press Association reports.

Meanwhile, Nestle has unveiled proposals for a further £200 million extension to its factory in Tutbury, Derbyshire, creating 125 new jobs.

Mark Leonard, the Co-operative Food's head of logistics service, said the new depot will provide a major boost to the local economy and jobs market.

"It will not only create a significant number of new jobs locally, but its proximity to our existing depots in the area will allow many staff to transfer to the new site, safeguarding around 740 jobs in the region," he added.

Mr Leonard explained that the site is ideally located near the motorway for easy access to employees, as well as building on the growing store network.

Construction to the new Co-op site is underway and it is expected to be fully opened by 2013.

As part of the reshuffling of Nestle, production at its coffee factory in Hayes, west London will transfer to Tutbury. The Hayes site will be closed in 2014, but it is hoped that employment positions will move with the company to the new locations.

Nestle recently announced that its head office is to move to Gatwick.
