Some 100 companies have pledged to offer work experience opportunities to young people looking for permanent jobs following the announcement of Nick Clegg's social mobility strategy. As part of the new scheme, law firms, supermarkets and banks have signed up to the initiative from the coalition government to boost employability and help youngsters get the vital skills they need for future job opportunities.
Mr Clegg suggested that the programme will help to put an end to the "who you know" attitude often seen in the jobs market.
Also signed up to the social mobility strategy are firms such as Barclays, HSBC, Marks and Spencer and Morrisons, as well as other large businesses that have an estimated total turnover of around £500 billion.
The deputy prime minister said: "This is an important step towards a society where it's what you know, not who you know, that counts. Working with the coalition, the biggest hitters in British business are helping lead the way to a fairer, more open society."
He added that this marks the start of a social shift among major employers whereby people from all walks of life will have the opportunity to showcase their talents and employability.
The social mobility strategy was launched by Mr Clegg in April last year.
