Chancellor George Osborne has unveiled plans to build a £650 million Airport City in the North West which could create around 21,000 permanent jobs. The plan, set to significantly overhaul the city of Manchester and its transport links, will be completed in two phases during which offices,
hotels,
retail outlets and manufacturing space as well as an extended cargo centre will be built.
Firstly, the large scale project put forward by the chancellor will concentrate on the commercial side of the development, while the later stages of the scheme will look to the freight and logistics sectors.
Bosses at MAG Developments, Manchester Airports Group's property arm, will also submit a planning application for the scheme's main road link to give access to logistics drivers.
Work is scheduled to start by the spring and will be completed in 12 to 15 months, according to MAG.
Chief executive of the group Charlie Cornish said: "Airport City is a concept we have been developing for a number of years and we are now at a critical stage in the project's life as we bring it to the market and commence phase one."
He added that the company has been enthused by the government's recognition of the project's potential and that it has great opportunities to better the region.
"We feel that this project presents a generational opportunity not only for the wider region, but nationally in order to attract new investment to the UK."
Manchester Airport is located to the south of the city, around 20 minutes commute by train from the city centre.
