Further increase in work placements during August

The number of people being placed in jobs by recruitment agencies increased in August this year, it has been revealed.

According to research carried out by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) and KPMG, the level at which the market is growing has fallen back from a peak attained in March 2010.

The Report on Jobs indicated that the rate of expansion in permanent posts was at its weakest level for ten months, while temporary staff placements growth also fell to a similar low.

In addition, there was pressure on the market from a drop in permanent candidate availability at the sharpest rate recorded since November 2007, while demand in both sectors eased.

Permanent and temporary staff pay continued to increase during August, while the two organisations reported growth in skills shortages.

REC chief executive Kevin Green remarked that the report highlights "the emergence of specific shortage areas, such as chefs, nurses, engineers and internet developers, which will provide opportunities for those with the right skills".

Mr Green recently highlighted the need for migrant workers to fill talent gaps after a study by KPMG and the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development indicated that many employers are still finding certain vacancies hard to fill.
