A total of 600 extra job vacancies are forecast after a scheme on the M4 received approval.

The £107 million project will see the Port Talbot and the docks area in Wales connected to the motorway at Junction 38, the BBC reports.

Under the plans to ease congestion around the facility, a three-mile (4.8 km) link road will be created over 33 months.

Supported by funding from the Welsh assembly government and the European Union (EU), it is anticipated to boost work in the area by generating 600 new employment opportunities.

The move is also expected to cut congestion around the port and reduce journey times, encouraging investment in the area.

Welsh economy and transport minister Ieuan Wyn Jones stated that the road will help to unlock "acres of prime commercial and industrial land".

Leader of Neath Port Talbot council Ali Thomas told the news source: "This strategic road will provide an attractive gateway to the town and open up development opportunities along our waterfront area."

Meanwhile, further job vacancies in Wales could materialise from plans to spend £9 million on the regeneration of Bridgend town centre, with the plans having been granted EU funding.
