LV= has revealed that it is expanding its existing apprenticeship scheme in order to offer more young people the opportunity to train in the sector.

The insurance, investment and retirement specialist currently has more than 150 members of staff enrolled on the programme and is now looking to extend it with further appointments during the coming year.

Founded in 2008, the apprenticeship scheme has more than 50 graduates to date and lasts for 12 months, with those successfully completing it receiving a Chartered Institute of Insurance foundation qualification and an NVQ level two.

In addition to the initial programme, an advanced initiative is also in place, with higher qualifications awarded, with funding for participants provided by the insurer and the government.

New staff can apply to join the scheme after six months with the company and must commit to self-study and project work, in addition to regular coaching sessions.

"The members of staff who have already graduated have been very impressed with the scheme with many of them signing up to do the next level of the course," LV= human resources director David Smith told HR Magazine.

It is offered at six LV= offices at present and the company is also currently recruiting for candidates to fill more than 200 job vacancies.

The mutual has been in operation since 1843, when it was founded as London Victoria.
