job description
Randstad Student Support provide non-medical support to students studying at University level and are looking for a qualified Dyslexia Tutor in the Bedford area.
Specialist tutors provide one to one assistance to students and work with an Individual Learning Plan (ILP). They encourage students to take responsibility for their own learning and to develop their skills as far as possible. Specialist support tutors are facilitators, not advocates or mentors.
They provide expertise in the area of language and study skills to help students to develop learning strategies to compensate as far as possible for their specific learning difficulties. Specialist tutors have superb communication skills, organisational skills and flexibility to adapt to the changing needs of students over the academic year.
It is recognised that flexibility is required ensuring that any support provided can be tailored to the needs of individual students. However, it is also recognised that tutors and students need a framework for their sessions so that responsibilities can be outlined and expectations can be negotiated appropriately.
As part of their role specialist support tutors are expected to establish and maintain professional boundaries, respect confidentiality within agreed disclosure levels, ensure work completed falls within the code of practice, refer students to other resources’ to help with queries that do not fall within the tutor role competencies and liaise with Randstad to make sure service standards are high.
Tutors should give clear advice to the student about their role and the nature of the help they can provide. Possible areas that sessions could focus on include:
• Developing an awareness of learning styles and strengths.
• Organisational skills.
• Time and resources management.
• Memory strategies.
• Reading skills.
• Notetaking from written material and lectures, as appropriate.
• Planning and writing skills.
• Locating and identifying relevant materials.
• The use of technological aids such as TextHelp and Inspiration (mind-mapping software).
